Refuse to accept poor treatment – a few weeks ago as I entered a store I overheard the tail-end of an interaction between a manager and a customer. Apparently the customer had been rude and aggressive towards the manager as he was trying to help her. As I walked by, he was asking her to leave the store.
What struck me was that he remained very calm and polite as he told her that it was not okay for her to come into his store and treat him in the way that she had. And although she tried to argue with him, he remained calm and repeated his request that she leave the store because he would not accept such treatment.
It reminded me that sometimes we do accept poor treatment and remain silent, perhaps because we’re afraid that people won’t like us, or perhaps we would feel guilty in some way if we stood up for ourselves.
The truth is that nobody needs to accept poor treatment and this interaction was a reminder that we can handle such a situation in a very positive and assertive way.
When you refuse to accept poor treatment, you are sending the message that you respect yourself, and that feels really good!
