Own your story – each week I receive a Top of Mind e-mail from marketing expert, Linda Popky. In last week’s e-mail she talked about being inspired by award-winning actress, Viola Davis, who spoke at the 3rd annual Watermark Conference for women in San Jose.
Linda said that Viola talked about discovering your story and owning it – knowing who you are, what you stand for, where you come from, and where you want to go.
I liked it so much that I asked Linda for permission to use it for this week’s EE Tip.
Often we try to escape our story – I know I did. But now I own it because I know it’s what led me here, to where I am now, and it’s what makes me who I am.
Owning your story doesn’t mean being attached to it – like continuing to feel bad because of the love you didn’t receive or how awful somebody was to you. Sometimes people identify so much with how bad things were that they can never move beyond them.
Owning your story means knowing exactly who you are and where you’re going. That level of self-awareness is liberating and when you own your story, you own who you are.
