Minimize distractions – in this world of technology it’s so easy to be distracted. It’s important to know what’s happening to your energy though when you are distracted, because it has more of an impact on you than you realize.
What are you missing out on? What energy are you bringing to the things you really want to do? When you are distracted, your energy is scattered. Apart from the fact that it can be dangerous, as in this picture, you may think it doesn’t matter or that people won’t notice, but that’s not necessarily true.
For example, I have been participating in some online workshops for the past week that are packed full of some very good information. For a lot of people listening in, this is new information that they are anxious to learn and to get right. Since the workshop is in webinar format, they also have a ‘Live Chat’ going on. So while the presenter is presenting and showing slides on the webinar, the participants can chat to each other or ask questions in the live chat.
What’s been interesting for me to observe is that often people are so busy typing things in chat or reading other people’s comments that they are missing the very content that they are there to hear.
I find people asking questions about things that have already been covered or that they have been told will be covered. People are asking questions that are completely off-topic. Some are even chatting with each other.
Sometimes there is a sense of panic from people that they are not getting the information that they want. This information is being presented, but they are not being present enough to hear it.
This doesn’t just happen on-line. For example, how often do you talk to someone on the phone while you are doing something else? How often do you give your full attention to the thing that you’re doing?
It’s easy to be distracted, but if something or someone is important to you don’t bring scattered energy. Be present more and you’ll discover a new sense of calm and being grounded.
